Geriatric medicine is a medical specialty that focuses on the healthcare of older adults. Geriatric medicine physicians, also known as geriatricians, are specially trained to manage the unique healthcare needs and concerns of older adults.
As we age, our bodies change and we become more susceptible to certain health conditions and diseases. Geriatricians are trained to assess and manage these changes, taking into account the impact of multiple chronic conditions, cognitive and functional impairments, social determinants of health, and other factors that can affect older adults.

To become a geriatrician, a physician completes a residency in internal medicine or family medicine, and then pursues additional training in geriatric medicine through a fellowship. Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine or the American Board of Family Medicine is also required to practice as a geriatrician.
